Description
Fine One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Manganese Floral Decoration, Signed "G N Fulton", Alleghany County, VA, circa 1875, cylindrical jar with heavily-tooled shoulder and flattened rim, boldly-decorated with three brushed tulips emanating from a stylized ground, surrounded by swag and blossom designs. Base with large signature of "G.N. Fulton" in manganese script. Fulton stoneware is often found with light decoration with weak contrast. This example features exceptionally strong, crisp manganese and an evenly-glazed, light-gray ground. The tulip motif can be linked to Fulton's tenure at the pottery of David Parr, Jr. in Richmond, VA. Tight, sealed horizontal crack at base, measuring approximately 6 1/2". Two horizontal patterns of wear on reverse. Wear to rim.
