Description
Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Drape-and-Tassel Decoration, attributed to Samuel Wilson, Henrico County, VA origin, circa 1820, ovoid jar with pronounced shoulder molding, applied tab handles, and tall collar with flattened rim, decorated on the front with a brushed cobalt drape -and-tassel motif, presumably modified from Manhattan and New Jersey designs of the early 19th century. Additional tassel decoration to reverse. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Some fine-grained exfoliation to surface, primarily on one side near base. A thin 3 1/4" crack from rim. Two rim chips, measuring 2 3/8" and 1". One handle with a 1" chip to one end and a 3/4" chip to opposite end. Other handle with two shallow edge chips. Two shallow chips and smooth, minor nick to base. A hairline extending several inches across underside, which forms a faint cross-shaped line at base. Some old paint spatter to surface.
