Description
Outstanding Five-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Profuse Stenciled Cobalt Decoration, Western PA origin, circa 1875, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded, and applied lug handles, decorated with elaborate stenciled floral motifs featuring a rose and a daisy, flanking a vertically-stenciled foliate motif with scrolled ends. Brushed cobalt stripes to shoulder and base. Stenciled "5" at base. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. The addition of a vertically-stenciled design at the center is unusual. An excellent example of Western PA stenciled decoration, exhibiting wonderful color. Provenance: Purchased by the consignor decades ago. Some in-the-firing crawling to cobalt slip. Y-shaped crack in underside, connecting to large vertical crack on reverse, which extends from base to shoulder. A smooth 1 3/4" chip to base on reverse, probably in-the-firing. H 15 1/2".
