Description
Rare and Fine Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "A & W BOUGHNER", Greensboro, PA, circa 1855, ovoid jar with combed midsection, tooled shoulder, ribbed lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, decorated with a large brushed design of three tulips emanating from a central stem with graduated leaves. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Reverse impressed with a rare Boughner maker's mark, which reads "A. & W. BOUGHNER" in a large-sized font, used relatively early in the family's foray into stoneware production. This jar features an appealing, early-period form and decoration with outstanding color, revealing a strong Beaver County influence much less evident in Boughner products of a decade later. Provenance: Collection of Lorren Lambert, Staunton, VA. A vertical 9" hairline under one handle. A short, faint line in one handle terminal. A salt drip to shoulder and near base.
