Jean Mayodon (1893-1967) is known for his elaborate glazing techniques. He developed a special technique to fire a vessel after every round of painting, which could be repeated up to six times. This process resulted in particularly interesting surface textures and colors. The skilled ceramist was the artistic advisor of the porcelain manufactory Sèvres from 1934 to 1939 and the artistic director of the manufactory from 1941 to 1942. It can be likely assumed that the present vessel was crafted during this period.

Condition:

The vase is in very good condition with minimal traces of use. It is 17.7 cm in height.

Jean Mayodon (1893-1967)

Born in Sèvres, Jean Mayodon worked as a painter, interior designer and ceramicist. He collaborated with architects and designed huge ceramic fountains and murals. Some of his large-scale works were produced for the ocean liner Normandie, an icon of the Art Deco design. Mayodon exhibited his works since 1919. He designed a variety of vases, bowls and plates. These are adorned with ancient or mythological motifs or show female nudes in the geometric style of the 1920s and 1930s.

Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres (est. 1740)

The porcelain factory of Sèvres is one of the most important European manufacturers of soft paste china. Since 1765, its headquarters have been based in Sèvres. Founded at Château de Vincennes outside of Paris in 1740, it began imitating Meissen porcelain in order to curb the import. In 1745, the production of soft past china was launched, which enabled a number of new shapes and colors. One of the most important clients of the factory was Madame de Pompadour (1721-1764). Louis XV paved the way for the reconstruction of the Sèvres manufactory. The manufactory came into royal possession in 1760. In 1790, it was nationalized. Today's Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres has a porcelain museum.(cko)
