Description
Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, Guanacaste, Nicoya Region, ca. 200 to 600 CE. This female venus figure possesses the elegant stylings of the Guanacaste-Nicoya artisans. The striking trichromatic ceramic style in red and black on cream ground with its glossy burnished finish demonstrates fine technique. She is quintessentially female and her pose accentuates her femininity with her breasts emerging over her belly and legs parted to reveal the region of her womb, the center of her femininity. The entire surface is ornately decorated. Intricate geometric patterns adorn her headdress, body paint, and costume accentuating the curves of her body and captivating the eye. This female effigy was most likely placed in the grave of an important ruler to grant him rebirth in the afterlife. Size: 3-1/4" H.
