Description
The following treasure is from the living estate of Ailene & Buddy Ford; noted dealers and lifelong collectors of exceptional antique & vintage heirlooms. The Ford estate presents highly valuable items from a diverse group of genres, 95% + in excellent condition. This exquisite estate has something for every eclectic collector! xxxxxxxxxxx. The AEAA is exceptionally proud to present this absolutely spectacular and Scarce triple discipline, 1900-1910 French Mont Joye sand textured, etched, and hand enameled, large flattened bulbous vase. This stunning flower vessel, features classic french pink / orange Water lilies, and is deftly punctuated with gorgeous band, sunrise and sailing ship etchings, placed at at 180 degrees. Our prominent Mont Joye vase weighs 2# 8 oz. and measures 8 x 7 inches tall, and is in wonderful condition! This Mont Joye jewel is one of a kind! xxxxxxxxxxx. The actual birth of Mont Joye texture etched & hand enameled glass is somewhat in dispute. E. S. Monot at his Cristallerie de La Villette near Paris is generally credited ca. 1859, with inventing the procedure for a quick acid bath, and immediate quenching, to achieve a textured finish without major glass etching. To these vessels, hand applied enamels were applied for rich floral and scenic themes. While Mont Joye glass in particular, diversified from the standard deep etched Cameo genre into fine French blown & formed glass with many vases being beautifully hand painted, there is no evidence that indicates the Mont Joye line began at La Villette, and furthermore by innuendo, Mont Joye was reported to have been by Saint-Hilaire Touvier de Varraux and Co. of Pantin, France, the same company that made De Vez glass. These reports to the contrary, new documents have established that the Mont Joye was in actuality the trademark of the August Legras Verreries de Saint-Denis. The first marked Mont Joye items appeared ca. 1890, and continued in production until the closing in 1914. Not only are the Mont Joye pieces highly diverse in form, but the textured & frosted surfaces are adorned with some of the finest European hand enameled decorations from the latter 1800s to WW I. Legras / Mont Joye is also noted for helping to pioneer the wide range of French Craquele & rough sandy surface pattern glass items. Craquele molds give the appearance of Crackle glass, but with a well defined redundant pattern, in lieu of the wildly scattered finish created by actually quenching & fracturing hot formed glass.
