Description
WE SHIP! The AEAA is proud to present this gorgeous hand painted transfer on oval porcelain French nude, entitled Epanouissment (Blooming) after the famed 19th century painter Angelo Asti (1847-1903). This exceptional portrait is aptly named, pertaining to the ladies bloom, and the back is signed A. Asti. Christies recently sold a gesso framed KPM example they called a Porcelain Oval Plaque of Erbluth, receiving $1,440! As much as we would like to claim that this was his own work, alas we cannot in good conscience. In truth, Angelo Asti was famed for his masterful oils on canvas, and by the 1890s, his works were widely reproduced on other base mediums. This spectacular portrait was almost undoubtedly finished in Germany by either the famed KPM (Krister Porcelain Manufactory), or by Hutschenreuther, both factories producing the classic Parisian style. This exact size, has been found on a KPM blank. Our treasure is 4 x 6 x .375 inches thick, weighs 5 oz. and is in great condition. This treasure only needs an ornate French Ormolu frame to be complete. This fine heirloom is from the living estate of Ailene & Buddy Ford, respected, longtime dealers of valuable antiques. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Born in Paris in 1847 of Italian parents, Angelo Asti embraced the romantic Paris style of portrait painting at a young age, and belonged to the family of painters of the School of Paris. He exhibited paintings of women at the Parisian exhibitions from 1890 to 1901. For many years, top art publishers such as Wolf & Co. of Philadelphia (1879-1931), sold fine Asti twentieth century reproductions on canvas. Angelo Asti (& others) idealized portraits of beautiful young women were a mainstay of late nineteenth century European advertising. In this regard, he is the predecessor of Charles Dana Gibson, whose Gibson Girl became the iconic figure of American commercial illustration in the early twentieth century. Unfortunately, Astis American breakthrough, was not consummated until 1904, one year after his passing. A grand splash was achieved with the use of his portrait Colette as the subject of the very first Pretty Girl calendar, published by Brown & Bigelow of Minneapolis in that same 1904. Angelo Asti passed near Mantua on March 23, 1903. The calendar was a blockbuster in its day, selling more than 1.5 million copies and opening the floodgates for his work in American advertising.
