Description
Egyptian Empire, New Kingdom, ca. 1085 BCE. A canopic jar lid carved from Egyptian alabaster of golden hues in the form of a jackal head with details of eyes, snout, mouth, and ears highlighted in black pigment. This jar was under the protection of Duamutef, one of the four sons of Horus, and the goddess Neith and would probably have contained the stomach. Canopic jars were created to contain the embalmed viscera removed from the deceased body in the process of mummification. Organs were placed under the protection of the Four Sons of Horus whose heads form the lids of the jars. This jackal-headed lid represents Duamutef under the protection of the goddess Neith. The others include Hapy (baboon-headed), Imsety (human-headed), and Kebehsenuef (falcon-headed) under the protection of the goddesses Nephthys, Isis, and Selket respectively. Size: 5-3/8" (13.7 cm) x 4-1/4" (10.8 cm).
