Description
Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Aztec, ca. 1300 to 1500 CE. A substantive and lively figural jar, created by the Aztec culture, depicting an elite warrior or shaman donning a magnificent and relatively large and expressive eagle mask with pronounced eyes and curved beak. The human visage within the open-mouthed eagle mask shows downcast eyes and appears to be engaged in prayer or chanting. Beyond the magnificent mask the figure dons a large belt and loin cloth. Perforations in ears probably once held ornaments. All was skillfully hand built and the surface shows red areas of cinnabar and is replete with root marks. Size: 8-3/4"L x 7-3/4"W x 7"H.
