Description
A fine Maya Chiefs bowl from El Salvador, ca. AD 400 – 700. It is 7-1/2 in in diameter and portrays a group of five seated Maya lords, each presenting an offering. The interior is decorated with four vultures, each depicted holding a speaking symbol in the beak. They surround a central Lamat glyph, which symbolizes the eighth day of the ritual calendar and is associated with the Heavenly Dragon. Fluted base, vivid paint, good mineral deposits.
