Description
A large Maya polychrome bowl from El Salvador, ca. AD 400 – 800, featuring a trio of animated monkeys, depicted playing the ballgame. The rim is decorated with a band of typical Copador style glyphs. In Maya mythology, monkeys are credited with teaching the Maya how to write. The entire bowl is covered with a light orange wash, which enhances the cream slip. Dia: 7 ¾ in.
