Gorgeous Roman Glass Tall-Neck Bottle
Item Details
Description
Roman, ca. 100-200 CE. This beautifully preserved bottle has a flared rim, a tall cylindrical neck, and a rounded body with a concave base. The long neck and flared rim would have been to control the flow of liquid when pouring; a very similar glass bottle found in Jerusalem has been analyzed and found to contain the remains of olive oil. Olive oil was one of the most important items in the Roman Empire, part of an enormous trading empire and used for everything from eating to bathing. The art of glass blowing was discovered in the Roman Empire in the late 1st century CE, and immediately led to a revolution. Glass replaced pottery for everyday homewares and trade goods. A bottle like this one would likely have been used in the home. Size: 5 3/4" tall and 4" diameter at its widest.

Provenance: Ex-Denenberg Fine Arts, Los Angeles, CA.
