Artist Unknown (19th Century) Portrait of a Rabbi. Oil on canvas, with stamp en verso: 'Verestchagin Collection, 1891' Sight: 14.25" x 11" Frame: 19" x 15.5"

This piece suatains a heavy varnish layer with rubbing and wear to the varnish at the perimeter by the frame. To the lower right corner, there is a 6" arc shaped mark as if something was laid on the surface before the varnish had fully dried. There is light craquelure to the dark fur hat and there may have been a puncture at the top as evidenced en verso from some restoration. This is only slightly visible recto in grazing light. There are approximately 8-10 scattered 'bumps' in the canvas as if impressed from the back. These measure from a pen-tip to .25". Despite these issues, the lot is in very good condition without flaking or pigment loss
