Description
Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Elaborate Slip-Trailed Cobalt Bird and Floral Decoration, Stamped "GEDDES, NY", William H. Farrar, third quarter 19th century, semi-ovoid jug with semi-rounded spout, decorated with an elaborate slip-trailed design of a bird and flower atop a stylized mound surrounded by a spotted border. Striped and spotted detail to bird's body and brushed cobalt highlight to wing. Flower with spotted accents to center of blossoms. Large slip-trailed "3" with scrolled base at shoulder. Brushed cobalt highlight to maker's mark. Farrar's bird designs are some of the most distinctive and recognizable in all of American stoneware. This jug's heavily slip-trailed mound, composed of alternating rows of swags, assists in creating a dynamic design with a strong folk art aesthetic. Very nice condition. Base with a 1" chip and a second minor chip. A few scratches to front near base. Some mottling to clay.
