Description
Very Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "MILLER & DAVISON / STRASBURG, VA.", circa 1880, cylindrical churn with flared collar and applied lug handles, decorated on the front and reverse with a double-stemmed flowering plant with heart-shaped leaves. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Cobalt dashes underneath each handle. Impressed under one handle with Miller & Davison maker's mark. Signed churn forms from the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia are considered scarce. This example features strong decoration and the unusual partnership mark of George W. Miller and George Henry Davidson. A 1" chipped section to the end of one handle. A 5/8" chip to opposite handle. A chip to exterior of rim. A chip and wear to interior of rim. Surface wear. A 4 1/2" reglued section at base, with a 2 3/4" hairline extending from it. This damage includes a 2 1/4" piece missing on underside.
