Description
Fire-gilded bronze. Sino-Tibetan, 18th cent.
An exceptionally rare, magnificent, compactly designed cult bronze of the three-headed and six-armed Guhyasamaja, seated on a lotus throne in yabyum with his tantric partner. She is also depicted with six arms and three heads, wearing a many-spiked crown and high chignon, altogether the smaller figure of the two. For Guhyasamaja, the crown encircles all his three heads together, which are expressively crafted and an interesting combination of fine, sensual character and, at the same time, presenting spiritual determination. The hands are gestural and hold some attributes: Guhyasamaja, a vajra and bell ghanta with crossed arms, while also embracing his Prajna. She is holding the same attributes beside his heads. All heads, also of Prajna, have a Third Eye. Some hands are formed to ward off evil spirits, others show the teaching gesture, resp. a combination of both mudras. The large chignon of Guhyasamaja displays a flaming ratna (pearl) as finish, the crown spikes are also shown as such, as also seen on the ear pendants. Guhyasamaja is a Sadhita and the personification of a tantric text, the Guhyasamajatantra. He could be the oldest Tantra of all and incorporates the highest Absolute of all Buddhas. As bronze sculpture, this depiction is very rare. Very good quality in all details executed, outstanding condition.
