Item Details
Description
Syro-Hittite, 1180 to 700 BCE. This pottery figure is in the shape of a human-bird transformative figure. Drilled holes in its headdress indicate that it may have been worn. Avian symbology is common in art from this time and place. Falconry was a common pursuit of the Hittite upper classes; also, many gods in their pantheon had avian components. Apkallu, for example, one of the demigods created to establish civilization for humans, is often depicted with a bird's head. A small figurine like this one may have been a grave good, or may have been part of a household shrine -- or both! Size: 1" L x 2" W x 4 1/2" H.

Provenance: Provenance: Ex-H. J. Berk, ex-Lester & Betty Guttman Collection, Chicago, IL. Purchased in the 1960's.
