Item Details
Description
Burma, Mandalay period, ca. 19th century CE. This lacquered and gilded wooden reliquary stupa has banded, carved lines around its body, reaching a narrow pinnacle at the top that serves as a handle to open the reliquary chamber. This piece is still able to be opened with a little bit of musclepower! In Buddhism, stupa are an important form of reliquary, and may be included in a larger complex known as a chaitya or cetiya. A reliquary like this one would have almost certainly been used in that manner. Size: 20-1/4" H x 9-1/2" L x 9-1/2" W (51 cm x 24 cm x 24 cm).

Provenance: Ex-Private Northern Colorado collection.

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
