Description
Japan, early 20th century CE. This statue depicts one of the so-called hairy Ainu from the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido. The Ainu are well-known for their robust presence of facial hair which is relatively rare in the rest of Japan. The statue depicts a hunter standing on a rock work base dressed in warm heavy robes, a quiver of arrows slung over his back. Walking stick in hand missing. The piece has a wonderful chocolate patina and is a nice example of Japanese late 19th-early 20th century bronze sculpture. Size: 17-3/4"H.
