Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. This is a slip-painted ceramic seated male warrior holding a club; his helmet and armor have cross-hatching marks to signify that they are made of wicker. He holds a club in small, idealized hands; his feet have three toes and his features are slitted eyes and mouth with a large nose. His helmet has horns, which some scholars have interpreted as some kind of connection to animals or other shamanic power. A figure like this would have guarded a West Mexican tomb. There are similar pieces in the British Museum, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Portland Art Museum. Size: 12" tall, 6" wide, and 6" deep.

Provenance: Ex-private Olan collection, California, by family descent, acquired 1960 to 1970.

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
