Description
Ben Kroll (b. 1912), sculpture, Untitled, Detroit, USA, 1950s, carved wood, alabaster, depicting a Pre-Columbian warrior with a disfigured face and an adornment of a lizard or crocodile, 11"w x 12"d x 19.5"h, Catalogue Note: Ben Kroll was an artist and sculptor who found work in the Detroit auto industry as a car designer and clay modeler, and through his own firm, Ben Kroll Designers. His auto designs are featured in the film American Dreaming: Detroit Automotive Styling 1946-1973. His wife Freda Kroll was also an artist and art teacher. The Krolls were said to have formed a friendship with Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo during their time in Detroit.
Condition
Light wear consistent with age, including scuffs, surface scratches, and small abrasions. One age-related vertical crack to the wood on the right side of the figure; the wood portion is still tight and secure. The figure's face is intentionally disfigured and not completely symmetrical. Unsigned. Purchased by the original owner from Kroll's estate in the Detroit, MI area.
