Description
A gentleman's tailcoat, 1830-40, of navy facecloth, double-breasted with angular lapels edged in cord, slim, curving sleeves, quilted under-arm areas to the lining, pocket in the rear right tail only, chest 92cm, 36in
Condition
Lining in upper part of jacket is missing, wear to edges of quilted satin lower back/side panels, tails lining has been replaced in large areas. Striped cotton lining in the sleeves looks c.1900. Blue facecloth is dark and clean appearance generally. Lapels, cuffs and front closure have a couched black thread edging. Black satin buttons are slightly faded. Black cord edging to buttonhole is largely detached or missing – ditto to front closure edges. It is detached from cuff edges also and loosely re-tacked in places. 8cm diagonal tear and repair above left cuff. Lower buttonhole on right cuff has a 1cm vertical tear. Cord edging is missing to centre back tail, 2 small moth holes to right lower edge of tail. 3x2cm L-shaped tear and repair to centre back tail hem. Pinhead hole to rear waist area. White soiling to right tail hem edge (minor). The rear waist buttons are slightly different – covered in grosgrain silk.
