Description
A gentleman's navy facecloth tailcoat, American, circa 1835-40, with brownish black velvet collar, double-breasted with studded gilt metal buttons by R & W Robinson of Attleboro, Mass, the sleeves with floral printed cotton lining, with pocket to tail accessed from inside below the waist, chest 92cm, 36in R & W Robinson operated between 1834 to c.1848.
Condition
Navy wool is generally good-one small moth attack but to surface pile only- no hole- on rear right sleeve, minor. Two more slight areas in left tail- again barely noticeable. Collar is badly worn, mainly at rear neck. Missing 5 buttons- 2 from front waist, 1 from rear waist and 1 at each base of tail. Inside is generally good, lovely printed sleeve linings, some fading to cotton at underarm areas. Coat is un-lined. Two parts of wool have been removed from tail linings, approx. 13x12cm each.
