Description
A man's elaborately embroidered court coat, circa 1790, of black and blue striped cannelé silk, embroidered in floss silks with stylised blooms, appliquéd with lace and muslin lilies, spangled with large mica sequins, tall stand collar, lined in ivory silk; together with an ivory silk waistcoat embroidered with large aureoles with sequin and purl wire centres; and a pair of black silk breeches (3)
Condition
Coat- generally clean, fresh appearance. Silk and embroidery are good. Mica sequins are generally good. Edging sequins missing on insides of cuffs and rear collar. A few missing from pocket flaps- but the front edges and tails are generally good. Buttons are good and complete. Ivory silk lining is generally clean and good- the odd small mark, slight wear at left underarm. Collar lining is frayed and split along upper edge.
Waistcoat- This is similar but non-matching. Silk is beginning to split along front hem edges. Embroidery is generally good. Perspiration stains at underarms and splits within the stains. Silk lining has been repaired along hem edges. Extra fabric has been let in at side seams to widen.
Breeches- Wear to edges of button holes on fall front waist. Very faint damp speckling on legs- not immediately noticeable. Scuffed areas to silk on rear upper leg areas. Wear to bright yellow plush ribbons to inside of knee bands. Stain to crotch interior which does not show on exterior.
