Description
ANTI-LYNCHING PUBLICATIONS
Lot of five anti-lynching pamphlets. Includes: "Lynchings and What They Mean" (Atlanta: Southern Commission on the Study of Lynching), 1931, 76pp. 8vo., an academic study into the culture of lynching in the twentieth century. The study gives a statistical breakdown of the accusations made against lynched individuals, the number of lynchings per state, and the age and gender of lynching victims, and goes on to examine the power dynamics that allowed lynch mobs to go unpunished, efforts made by whites to frame African-Americans for crimes, and the legal consequences of lynchings. The pamphlet includes a large fold-out map charting all lynchings committed between 1900 and 1930. Cover moderately toned, else very good. WITH: "The Mob Still Rides" (Atlanta: Commission on Interracial Cooperation), 1935, 24pp. 8vo., an updated follow-up to the previous document, covering the years 1931-1935. It provides an updated examination of the causes and effects of lynching and a statistical analysis of lynching victims and perpetrators, with special attention paid to the upswing in prevented lychings. Front and back covers moderately toned, with a sticker mark on the front cover, else very good. WITH: "Southern White Women on Lynching and Mob Violence" (Atlanta: Commission on Interracial Cooperation), n.d., 8pp. 4" x 9", a collection of pronouncements condemning the lynching epidemic, issued by "Women's Committees on Race Relations" from each southern state, as well as a set of overarching resolutions issued by the Woman's General Committee of the Commission on Interracial Cooperation. Moderately toned covers, stamps from the Tennessee Historical Society on the front and back, else very good. WITH: "Feeling is Tense" (Atlanta: Association of Southern Women for the Prevention of Lynching) April, 1938, 19pp. 4" x 9", gives a breakdown of lynchings and prevented lynchings by state for the year 1937. Includes a fold-out map charting lynchings by state for the years 1930-1937. Stamps from Mary Hardin-Baylor College (now University of Mary Hardin - Baylor) on front and back covers, else very good. WITH: "Lynching: America's National Disgrace", by James Weldon Johnson (New York: National Association for the Advancement of Colored People), January, 1924, 8pp. 8vo., contemporary reprint of a New York Times article by the National Secretary of the NAACP. Weldon discusses lynching as an instrument of political terror, which drives Africa-Americans out of the south, the negative social effects and threat to law and order posed by lynching, and the need to educated the public nationwide about the lynching epidemic. Minor toning, small indented tear on rear cover, else very good.
