Description
LINCOLN BROADSIDE IN GERMAN PRINTS HIS ADDRESS OF JULY 4, 1861
Very rare if not unique broadside, 15 1/4" x 22", being the German "Supplement to The Montgomery County Press", a single-sided broadside printing of Abraham Lincoln's address to Congress addressing the attack on Fort Sumter and the inevitability of war. The broadside, issued at Norristown, Pa. on July 9, 1861, features a portrait of a beardless Lincoln at top with the entire text of Lincoln's speech translated to German and signed in type. Folds and a few stains, edge wear and a small occasional tear, else very good. The Montgomery County Press, published by John Shupe, was founded in 1860 and appealed to the large number of Germans settled in eastern Pennsylvania. Many of its readers, loyal Unionists, would join German-affiliated regiments fighting in the Civil War.
