JEAN DE LA FONTAINE (1621 ? 1695) The most famous French fabulist and one of the most widely read French poets of the 17th century. He is known above all for his Fables, which provided a model for subsequent fabulists across Europe and numerous alternative versions in France. A rare printing of his "Fable Choisies, Mises en Vers Par Monsieur de le Fontaine, Seconde Partie", [Paris: Claude Barbin], 1668. 220pp. 12mo. with 4pp. "Table de Fables" at conclusion, includes 58 illustrations by Francois Chauvin. Pencil noattaion by a collector within states that this edition was described in Graese IV, 72 as reprinted with several corrections. In original brown sheepskin covers with five gilt decorated boxes and gilded florets on hubbed spine, typical exterior wear to covers. esp. lower-right.
