Description
Rome, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. bronze handle adorned with a lively rendering of a goat with magnificently curled horns. The ancient Romans used bronze to create more than weapons and tools. This medium was also used to make everyday items such as this handle, which was most likely intended for a small door or piece of furniture. True to the ancient Roman sensibility, this piece is no ordinary utilitarian handle, but rather is adorned with a fabulous goat form, the goat-like aspect associated with the Greek god Pan and Satyrs. Roman bronzes like this example are especially alluring for their fine details and wondrous green patinas! Custom, museum-quality stand. Size: handle itself measures 3-1/8" x 1-1/4" (7.9 x 3.2 cm); on stand 4-1/4" x 1-1/2" (10.8 x 3.8 cm)
