Rockingham, New Hampshire, 1811. Cheswill was a bi-racial citizen of N.H. and considered to be the first African-American to hold public office. He was a contemporary of Paul Revere and as a patriot, participated in the activities of warning the towns that the British were coming. He was also in the party that built rafts to defend Portsmouth Harbor. He is sometimes referred to as the "African-American Paul Revere." An amazing document in the hand of such a prominent figure in Revolutionary War history. Condition Fine.
