Description
American Federal Inlaid cherry sofa, possibly Maryland or Eastern Virginia. Serpentine back with continuous arms, inlaid with a pitch circle and swag of bellflowers suspended from a ribbon bow; over square tapered legs inlaid with similar decoration within a string inlay surround and topped by an oval, flower and stem-inlaid medallion; front legs terminating with brass casters cuffs. Partially removed upholstery reveals a pine frame, the center back brace support with two rosehead nails securing it. 37"H x 75 1/2"W x 27"D. Condition
Upholstery removed, remaining cover with various stains and tears. Rear right leg with a triangular pieced repair to base, old repair and damage where frame meets the center rear leg (strengthened with a metal plate) - center rear leg possibly replaced in late 19th/early 20th century. Inlaid arms and legs with scattered bruising and abrasions, frame with upholstery hole and scattered insect damage from the past.
