The sheet is in overall good condition, consistent with age. The paper shows a few faint handling marks along the edges. The paper is slightly browned in the edges. The lower edge is slightly irregular, probably due to the production process. The image measures 40 x 29 cm and the sheet 69 x 51.5 cm.



Mark Tobey (1890-1976)

Mark George Tobey - the forerunner of Abstract Expressionism - was born in 1890 in Centerville in the United States and died 1976 in Basel, Switzerland. His works show the influence of the Far East and calligraphic art. Among his best known works, there are the ‘White Writings’ (since 1944), in which network-like structures spread before a bright background. Tobey studied at the Art Institute in Chicago and worked as an industrial designer, portrait painter, and fashion illustrator for Vogue. In 1958, Tobey exhibited at the Venice Biennial and gained international notoriety. Works by Tobey can be found in important collections of museums, including the Tate Gallery in London, the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, as well as the Whitney Museum of Art in New York.
