David Salle (American, b. 1952)
Born in Norman, Oklahoma, David Salle is a post-modern painter, printmaker, sculptor and stage designer. In 1970, he received a BFA and MFA from the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, where he worked alongside John Baldessari. Drawing upon art historical references, pop and advertisement culture, and photography, the artist uses an ad-hoc pictorial language to create figurative fantasies. The Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; the Los Angeles County Museum; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York; the Tate Modern, London; and the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra, are among the private collections that include Salle’s work. Today, he lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
