Description
This is one well made lantern. It is hard to find the seams, junction of the applied barrels to the cylinder of the globe. This is usually an obvious thing that is sometimes thought to be a crack and looks like an overlap of the glass. The craftsmanship is really excellent With a free blown globe there are no vertical mold seams in the globe. The wreath cutting is an unusual early style. Later wreaths have a more symmetrical look. This wreath is more of a flowing branch of leaves and not a geometric floral pattern. I had one other 1854 New England Glass Co (Cambridge Glass) patent fixed globe with this strange asymmetrical look.
It's got the classy little original button cap the covers the top vent opening (bale pic). The base bell assembly has some very minor dings and is slightly bent but nothing that really detracts. The fount also has the nice tapered / rounded top look of civil war era presentation lanterns. I know because I have others.
I still haven't found this guy "J Roach". I have good northern New England research material but he's not in there. It's possible he was either a boat captain or military officer. I just don't know.
There is old plaster in both the base and top assemblies. I can guarantee that nobody has monkeyed with restoration on this lantern. Even the brass
