Description
Far East, China, Song Dynasty, ca. 960 to 1299 CE. A lovely light-green glazed granary storage jar with a figure of a tiger in an upper panel and four panels that feature text, including some that dates the piece precisely to the Song dynasty. Interestingly, the text of another panel informs the reader that this vessel was placed on the west side of a doorway and the vessel on the other side would have had a dragon depicted upon it. Beyond this, the panel between the two arched panels containing writing shows a formidable pair of typical Chinese doors with a section of roof above with attributes and stylings characteristic of the Song Dynasty. Not only is this a beautiful example of admirable Song pottery that displays well, it is a historically important piece, with considerable informative writings. What's more, the attractive light green glaze is emblematic of the wonderful celadon glazes to follow. Quite simply, a stupendous and rare find! Size: 14" H (35.6 cm)

Condition
Excellent, the 16 marks around the upper rim were from when the jar was fired upside down in the kiln and were made by the supports, 16 in this case instead of the normal 4-6, because this is a really big piece, and difficult to fire as perfectly as this.
