Item Details
Description
Description: After a style referred to as Martha Washington, the piece has four drawers and two storage compartments on either side for material. Constructed of mahogany veneers over pine each section is highlighted by string, inlay banding of contrasting wood. The flanking storage compartments are butt jointed in seven sections to form the half round and then veneered in fancy grained mahogany of a single piece. Brasses are lion's head form, legs are tapered and the spade feet are Hepplewhite in style.

History: Martha's original sewing cabinet was a small work table with an open shelf space in the middle, with no drawers, set between two storage compartments. A fabric skirt, draping to the floor, shielded the shelves.
