Description: Group of 6 various pieces of Wedgwood black basalt.1. Large basalt bowl with machine, or engine, turned decoration, c.1880-1930.2. Inkwell (2"x3.75" diameter), smooth sides, no decoration, date marks 1865.3. Teapot (3.5"x3.75"x6.5") with machine turned decoration, c.18804. Candlestick with laurel and papyrus leaves around the bowl, tapered balustrade with pastoral scenes, and a scalloped octagonal base encircled with acanthus leaves. Marked with an impressed "Wedgwood", the base was drilled as if for electricity.5. Two pieces from a chess set, the queen and a rook. Both have very fine detailing, are marked with an impressed "Wedgwood", "Made in England" and are dated 1965 and 1968.6. Salad plate, marked "Wedgwood" and "Made in England".
History: Trials for Josiah Wedgwood's new black body had begun by July 1766. By September 1767 his experiments were at an advanced stage, ready for production, and less than twelve months later, in 1768, black basalt wares were on the market.
