Item Details
Description
Description: Decoy Canadian Goose with nicely-carved head and finely-painted body in the Harve De Grace, Upper Chesapeake Bay style.

History: R. Madison Mitchell (1901-1993) had a meticulous eye for detail. This attention to detail may have come from his original profession as a mortician. In the late 1930's Mitchell began selling the decoy ducks he carved during slow times at the funeral home. Mitchell decoys are very lifelike, with realistic features including painted eyes, realistic body positioning and are recognized by his intricate carving style. Mitchell elevated humble, everyday hunting tools to national treasures, some of which are now displayed in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington. Mitchell carved tens of thousands of decoys in a span of 60 years. His work won international praise, and he inspired dozens of artists to take up this craft.
