Description: Circular wooden box contains twelve "hydrostatic balls" that were used in the 18th and early 19th century to measure the strength or "proof" of alcoholic spirits. A label of description is attached to inside bottom.

History: Hydrostatic balls aka bubbles were used to measure the strength of spirits, each bubble having a slightly different density. This box of eleven bubbles is by Peter Massino and dates from 1815. Box of eleven hydrostatic ballsFrom the 18th century.

This rare example of hydrostatic balls for proofing/proving the content of alcohol in spirits is in remarkable condition for such an old item. Upon observation, the wooden case has no significant scratches, dents or dings but does have some minor scuff marks.
