Description: Surveyor's compass with brass frame, two leveling bubbles, tripod mount and silvered face inscribed 'E. A. Kutz, New York'. Housed in its original mahogany box with dovetailed corners and brass handles, latches and hinges.
History: Erasmus A. Kutz, Sr. was born in England in 1778. He came to America after 1812 and is first listed in the New York City directories: 1818-1820, rule maker, 343 Water St.; 1842-1850, nautical and mathematical instrument maker, 180 Water, Newark. The 1850 Federal Census for New Jersey lists him: Erasmus A. Kutz, age 72, occupation none, born in England, residence 23 Centre St. North Ward. "Erasmus A. Kutz, Jr. was born in New York City in 1822 and died in Brooklyn in 1868. He is first listed in the New York City directories: 1839-40, rule maker, 2 Stanton; 1850-51, instrument maker, 117 Madison; 1856, instruments, 91 Monroe; 1863-64, clerk, 236 9th Ave."
