Item Details
Description
Description: This watercolor on paper painting depicts a slave cabin in St. Augustine, Florida. It is signed lower right. The foreground depicts one cabin in particular. Three African-American children playing outside while an older female appears to be washing clothes. Wet clothes can be seen hanging from a clothesline behind the cabin. The cabin itself has a small front porch and visibly needs roof repairs. The neighboring cabins on either side are also in need of repair. Emmet Fritz painted in the tradition of late 19th and early 20th century landscapes, cityscapes plus Caribbean Islandscapes and particularly the lively street scenes of St. Augustine, Florida. His brief studies with Norman Rockwell in 1937 clearly show through in his style. Not framed.

History: Emmett Fritz was born John Emmett Fritz October 13, 1917 in Kansas City and died in Florida on November 29, 1995. He studied at Pratt Institute in 1937 and studied briefly with the noted Norman Rockwell. He painted landscapes in New England through the late 1930's and 1940's, and also worked as an illustrator and cartoonist for the comic strip "Roxie West". In 1950, he left New York and moved to St. Augustine, Florida, where he became an active and much-loved member of the thriving artists' community. A prolific painter in both oil and watercolor, Fritz had great success in his own colorful impressionist style depicting Caribbean islands and particularly street scenes of St. Augustine and Palm Beach. One of his paintings is featured in the Lightner Museum publication "Lost Colony" : "The Artists of St Augustine, 1930-1950" by Robert W. Torchia, and in 2004, a major retrospective show, "Emmett Fritz Memorial Exhibit" was sponsored jointly by the St Augustine Art Association and the St Augustine Historical Society. His work is in a number of museums and private collections, including the collection of King Juan Carlos of Spain. He is also listed in the publication, "Coast to Coast" by Gary Libby and other references. .
