Item Details
Description
Description: A 6.5" long ivory page turner with an elaborate pierced metal monogram mounted to the side. The top portion to be hand held is .25" thick.

History: Page turners did exist, but they were a Victorian invention. They were very similar to paper knives and could have been used as paper knives. Their most distinguishing feature was that they tended to have longer blades. Most paper knives had a blade which was eight to nine inches long, while most paper turners had blades of over a foot long. Page turners were rather more trouble than they were worth, so not a lot of them were made. They were difficult to handle and if they were not used carefully, they could damage the pages of the books they were supposed to protect.
