Russian Icon of the Virgin of Kazan, 19th c., with a gilt silver relief decorated oklad, Moscow, 20th c., marked "DS" in Cyrillic, H.- 12 1/2 in., W.- 10 5/8 in.
Condition
Condition consistent with age. Flea-sized losses are noted to the gold leaf in the center. Light wear and soiling is observed in Christ's robe. Dirt residue and tarnish are seen throughout the oklad. Minor indentations are noted along the edges near the pins. Moderate wear is seen to the velvet backing. Does not fluoresce under black light. A fascinating piece.
