Original 1920 Art Deco William Longyear Chinese Chinoiserie Great Wall watercolor by noted New York avant-garde illustrator and Art Students League, Columbia University and Pratt Institute artist.
LONGYEAR, William Llowyn (born 1899): Great Wall of China or Related Asian Motif, watercolor/illustration paperboard, 12 1/2 x 7 3/4 inches (visible sight dimensions within mat), 12 3/4 x 8 inches (approximate artwork image size under mat), 15 x 10 inches (approximate artwork illustration board overall size including margins under mat), 19 3/4 x 15 x 3/4 inches framed, signed "W. Llowyn Longyear" and dated '20 in ink lower middle left. Contemporary silvered frame molding (glass absent).

Wiiliam Llowyn Longyear (b. 1899) Biography
"William L. Longyear was an illustrator, designer, author and professor. Born in Manhasset, New York, he studied at the Art Students League, Columbia University and the Pratt Institute. He worked at the Museum of Science and Industry in New York and as an illustrator at Fortune magazine. He also designed board games and authored several books beginning in the 1930s, most of them textbooks on advertising design and typography; some of his books remained in print into the 1960s. By 1940, Longyear was on the faculty at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, where he served as Chairman of the Department of Advertising Design and as Associate Dean. Today there is an endowed scholarship for design students at Pratt named in his honor."

Condition
Pigment in very sound as discovered estate condition. No visible imperfections within matted area. Hues have evenly mellowed over 95 years. Borders under mat show a narrow toning line along the top not visible when matted plus heavy adhesions, a modern paper adhesion along left border and border abrasions throughout from a previously glued-down mat since replaced. Scattered patina wear to contemporary frame molding. Glass is absent and rear foamcore has been secured with clear tape.
