(William, designer, author, and visionary socialist, 1834-96) 2 Autograph Letters signed to Euphrosyne Cassavetti, together 3pp. & 1 envelope, 8vo, 26 Queen Square, Bloomsbury, n.d., envelope date stamped 27th May 1871, on visiting, "I was going to write to you today & say I should be very happy to come on Wednesday; but this morning I have seen Ned [Sir Edward Burne-Jones, first baronet (1833-1898), painter] who says that he has suggested Thursday instead: I shall be very glad to come that day, and perhaps as I am shy before strangers it would be merrier: so I shall come that evening if I don't hear from you", and thanking her for a gift of a picture, "Please explain about a beautiful Dante which was left here this morning by someone Wardle [Sir Thomas Wardle (1831-1909), silk dyer and printer] thinks was you: I am sorry I missed you if you called", folds. Unpublished. "William Morris sought Wardle's advice on working with vegetable dyes such as madder, woad, and indigo, which had fallen into disuse following the invention of aniline dyes in 1856. Wardle employed dyers who had direct experience of them, and in the years 1875 to 1877 Morris came to experiment at the Hencroft dyeworks frequently, lodging at Wardle's house. By 1878 Wardle was printing fourteen of Morris's designs on silk and cotton." - Oxford DNB. Provenance: By descent in the family.
