Description
Far East, China, Han Dynasty, ca. 206 BCE to 220 CE. This is a cast bronze, decorated bell with a delightful shape and a delicate and still attached clapper. This bell would have been affixed to the saddle of a horse. The horse was incredibly important to the Han Chinese; Ma Yuan, a Han general, said, "Horses are the foundation of military power, the great resources of the state but, should this falter, the state will fall" -- the Han even went to war with the Dayuan of Central Asia to acquire their Ferghana horses, known as the "War of the Heavenly Horses". This bell is a reminder of that importance. Size: 2.6" L x 1.25" W x 2.6" H (6.6 cm x 3.2 cm x 6.6 cm).
