Description
Scarce Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Woman Decoration, Uniontown, PA origin, circa 1865, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder and flared rim, decorated with a brushed cobalt design of a woman standing atop a stylized ground between two trees with sponged leaves. A cloak covers the woman's torso, created by additional overlying strokes of cobalt, and the hem of her dress is accented with sponged cobalt. A distinctive arch of cobalt sponging appears above the figure. The jar's right side is impressed with an ornate two-gallon capacity mark featuring leaf-like veining. Provenance: Descended in the family of legendary Ohio antiques dealer, Clark Garrett. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with a minor in-the-firing chip to underside and some Albany slip spatter to surface. H 12 3/4".
