Description
Scarce One-and-a-Half-Gallon Stoneware Pitcher with Cobalt Spotted Tulip Decoration, Stamped "JOHN BELL / WAYNESBORO'", PA origin, circa 1850-1880, ovoid pitcher with tooled rim and applied strap handle, decorated with two large spotted cobalt tulips flanking a cross-shaped blossom, applied over a streaky whitish slip. Additional foliate decoration to collar, along the handle, and flanking the lower handle terminal. Impressed along collar with John Bell maker's mark above a one-and-a-half-gallon capacity mark. Excellent form, unusual size, and classic John Bell decoration. Thin crack extending from far right edge of spout to midsection of pitcher, connecting to a large network of surface crazing on pitcher's right side. This crazing is not visible on the interior and presumably occurred in the firing. A thin crack on underside, extending approximately 6" up reverse of pitcher. A tiny stone ping to spout. A salt drip to front. H 12".
