Bio: Known generally as a famous landscape painter of Hawaii, Lionel Walden was a New Englander by birth. As a young man Walden moved to Paris where he studied with Carolus Duran. In Paris Walden became acquainted with Kimo Wilder, a Honolulu artist. On Wilder’s invitation, Walden traveled to Hawaii in 1911. There Walden quickly gained a reputation for his moody, light-filled paintings of stormy seas. While the tendency of many contemporary artists was to capture the violence of Hawaii’s volcanoes, Walden preferred capturing the ocean in “all its moods, colors and actions”. While his fame derived mostly from his paintings of Hawaii, Walden considered his home to be France, and died in Chantilly in 1933.
