Attributed to Angelica Kauffman (Austria 1741-1807) Original graphite drawing and etching Sight Size: 3 1/8 x 4.75 in / 3.75 x 4 7/8 in. Along with Reynolds, Kauffmann was a founding member of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture. Paintings by her are in that collection, and from 1769 to 1782, she had entries in the RA annual exhibitions with one of the most notable being in 1778, Leonardo Expiring in the Arms of Francis the First. In London she worked with architect Robert Adam painting murals, and she also became a good friend of American expatriate painter, Benjamin West. Some of Kauffman's paintings of that period are monumental in size such as the group portrait, The Family of the Earl of Grover, 59 X 82 inches, completed in 1772, and now in the collection of the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington DC. Because of her affiliation with the Academy, Kauffmann worked on the decorations of St. Paul's Cathedral, and on the Academy's lecture room at Somerset House.
